What We're Listening To
1. Soft Sounds from Another Planet - Japanese Breakfast
Zauner’s vague, bittersweet lyrics add a moody touch to this spacey track. This is the kind of song I wish I had during my early emo adolescence when being a girl felt impossible.
2. Son Amores (That’s Amore) - Natalia Lafourcade
Natalia Lafourcade’s dreamy latin-pop ballads will make you feel like you’re living life through an indie romance film. This track is a great gateway for anyone looking to explore foreign music.
3. Unstoppable - Lianne La Havas
Lianne La Havas is easily one of my favorite gals in the industry. This groovy melody from the soul queen makes a great song to belt in the shower or another fantastic daydream tune.
4. Teen Challenge - Great Grandpa
This pop track features some grungy undertones and some serious 90s nostalgic vibes channelled through distorted guitar strums and wailing vocals.
5. Get Disowned - Hop Along
For a band name that sounds such fun, Hop Along’s songs get brutally honest. Much like Great Grandpa, they also channel some 90s nostalgic vibes. The only way I can seem to describe their sound is a high school breakup in song form.
6. Death of the Phone Call - Whatever, Dad
The gentle vocals and bright plucking create a rather sweet sound that’s similar to waking up to the sun rising, or watching a loved one fall asleep on a road trip. According to the artist’s SoundCloud page, the lyrics for this were used in his intermediate French final. What a fun fact.
7. Starting Again - Lisa Prank
Lisa Prank’s “Starting Again” concludes the accidental theme of moody love(?) songs. All I can say is if this preppy pop-punk bop doesn't make you want to grab a hairbrush and perform in front of your bathroom mirror, you're listening wrong.
