Syd's 2024 Spotify Wrapped
Spotify Wrapped is officially out, which means it’s time for the third installment of Sydney breaking down their Spotify Wrapped. I graduate this month(yikes!) also making this the final installment. Checkout my wrapped from 2023 and 2024 if you want to compare. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy my Spotify Wrapped 2024 Breakdown.
The Basics:
This year I listened to Spotify for a total of 98,023 minutes, putting me in the top 1% of listeners worldwide. Last year my minutes were way down, so I am happy to see this number back in what I would consider a normal range for myself.
Genres:
Historically Spotify Wrapped gave insight into your top genres of music for the year. Possibly due to some of the backlash they received last year, this was left out from this year’s Wrapped. Luckily, I am a music nerd, so I will be utilizing stats.fm for this portion (misleading article title, I’m sorry) By using my total minutes listen to my top artist, I estimated the Spotify Wrapped time tracked to be 1/1/2024-11/12/2024. In this time, my top genres(and my top artists in that genre) are as follows:
Rock – 24,994min (saturdays at your place, Belmont, Waterparks, Fall Out Boy)
Pop – 16,420min (Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, Gilanares, Fall Out Boy)
Alternative – 14,323min (Del Water Gap, Chase Atlantic, Summerbruise, Lorde)
5th Wave Emo – 14,224min (saturdays at your place, Worst Party Ever, Carpool, Ben Quad)
Pop Punk – 12,668min (Belmont, Waterparks, The Home Team, Neck Deep)
Artists:
This year I listened to 1,732 different artists, I was expecting this number to be higher than 2023, so I was surprised that I listened to over 100 less artists. I felt like I discovered so many new artists this year. That said, I have been working on listening to more of an artist’s discography when I find them, which is likely contributing to this number being lower. My top artist of 2024, with 10,043 minutes listened was…….. saturdays at your place, putting me in their top 0.005% of listeners. I saw S@YP four times this year, so this came as no surprise to me.
Taking the number two spot for the second year in a row is Taylor Swift. Honestly, I don’t remember listening to her THAT much this year, but I’m sure I did. Coming in at number three, and the first time they’ve made it into my top 5, is Belmont. I saw this Chicago based group twice this year, and was actually expecting them to be my #2. In fourth, with a major drop from last year, is Waterparks. I saw them once this year, and parxies don’t come for me please, but I was somewhat uninterested by their music for a good chunk of the year. Rounding out my top five, and down 2 spots from last year, is The Home Team. I saw them twice this year as well, and although I don’t love their new album as much as the old stuff, they are still a staple in my everyday listening.
Songs:
This year I listened to 3,219 songs, up around 300 from last year. Like I said, I’ve been trying to listen to more music from artists I find, so this increase doesn’t shock me.
With a very casual 625 streams my top song of the year was “eat me alive” by S@YP. I love this song, and was a bit surprised I didn’t break 700. I love this song, and listen to it at least once a day. I am wondering if my number of streams isn’t higher because I often restart it before letting it end.
The #2 spot is also taken by saturdays, “it’s always cloudy in Kalamazoo” is a song I truly don’t think you can appreciate unless you’ve been to Kzoo. Before moving here my mom warned me that, ‘the sun doesn’t shine in Kalamazoo,’ so it’s no surprise that SAYP also noticed this phenomon.
Keeping the emo vibes going, my third most listen to song was “what about you?” by Worst Party Ever. Despite having released no new music since 2022, they have a ton of bangers. I played “what about you?” on my first ever show at WIDR, so it holds a very special and nostalgic place in my heart. I guess I was yearning for that nostalgia this year.
My fourth most listen to song of the year was “Parasitic” by Belmont. This is one of the first Belmont songs I ever heard, and each time I listen I remember why I love them so much. They bring so much energy into every track, and keep things interesting.
Rounding out my top five is Gilanares with “Good Person.” This was the first Gilanares song I heard, and I was immediately drawn in due to her lyricism. If I am having a breakdown, you can bet I’m listening to this song. But, it’s also a great time to scream in the car.
Honorable mentions for top song are the following:
#6 pourover by saturdays at your place. I have nothing to say for myself to be honest.
#7 Good Girls(Don’t Get Used) by Beach Bunny, up from #8 last year. Still a banger, still love to sing along.
#8 Liminal by Belmont is not what I would consider my 2nd favorite song by them, so this was a bit interesting to me.
#9 Backroom by Rex Laurent is a TikTok find for me. There is a nightcore version as well, but I prefer to stick to the original.
#10 coffee cups by saturdays at your place, I think is my third favorite song by them (although mood swings has been growing on me as of recent).
